With the A18 Pro Chipset, iPhone 16 Pro Models Are Expected to Provide On-Device AI Performance

The iPhone 16 series is already one of the most anticipated phones of 2024, despite the iPhone 15 series having only been released for roughly seven months. The iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumored to be the four versions in the lineup. According to early reports, the tech giant based in Cupertino, California, is hard at work developing an A18 Pro processor with a primary focus on artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for the next generation of iPhones. For the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models, Apple used an older A16 chip; for the Pro variants, they used an entirely new A17 Pro chip. which improves AI Performance.

In his research note, Haitong International Tech Research’s Jeff Pu provided information regarding the A18 Pro CPU, as 9to5Mac noted. The expert claims that Apple is preparing to modify the A18 Pro chip to enable on-device AI. The chip manufacturer is increasing output sooner than usual.

Our supply chain inspections reveal that, while Apple’s A17 Pro volume has stabilized since February, we are witnessing rising demand for the A18. We note that the 6-GPU variant of Apple’s A18 Pro will have a larger die area (than the A17 Pro), which may indicate a trend for edge AI computing, Pu noted in his email. The device will be able to hold more transistors and specialized parts thanks to the increased die area. This would pave the way for the iPhone 16 Pro series to include additional on-device AI Performance.

It is believed that a chip’s die area increases the likelihood of problems and design errors. It might also have an impact on heat dissipation and energy efficiency.

According to reports, Apple plans to release its AI features this year in two phases. It might operate some AI functions entirely on the device and rely on cloud infrastructure in collaboration with Google for other aspects.

With significant updates and revisions, the iPhone 16 series is anticipated to launch in the second half of this year. The A18 SoC is anticipated to be included in the basic iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, however, the A18 Pro chip may be included in the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. Recently, the A18 Pro showed up with 3,500 points on Geekbench 6.
