Review of the Tecno Phantom V Flip: Flipping Without Breaking the Bank

Is this the best foldable phone under Rs. 60,000 in India?

Foldable phones are still a long way from becoming mainstream smartphones, and for good reason: they’re either too expensive or there’s a perception that they won’t last more than a couple of years. However, the quality of folding screens has significantly improved in recent years, and foldable phones are gradually becoming more affordable in terms of pricing. Motorola launched the Razr 40 earlier this year, priced under Rs. 60,000, and Tecno followed suit with the Phantom V Flip.

Price of the Tecno Phantom V Flip in India

The Phantom V Flip is priced at Rs. 54,999 in India — the early bird price was only available for a month after the phone was released — and comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. It comes in two colorways: Iconic Black and Mystic Dawn.

Phantom V Flip design by Tecno

When unfolded, the Tecno Phantom V Flip is a thin smartphone, which is advantageous because it results in a compact form factor when folded shut. It has a vegan leather exterior that provides good traction. The inner screen has a crease that is visible on dark wallpapers and when the screen is turned off, but it is barely noticeable when using the phone. You might notice the crease if you hold the phone at certain angles with the screen on, and you can feel it when scrolling inside apps.

According to Tecno, the drop-shaped hinge used for the foldable display mechanism has a ‘Hoverlock’ design that allows the phone to be opened between 30 and 150 degrees. When the display is closed, there is no space between the two halves. The Phantom V Flip has a circular cover display that looks like it belongs on a smartwatch and is surrounded by two cameras.

The fingerprint scanner is located on the right side of the phone and is easily accessible with one hand. When attempting to open the phone, there is some resistance — no complaints here because it appears to allow the phone to remain steady when bent at various angles.

Specifications and features of the Tecno Phantom V Flip

The Phantom V Flip is powered by a Dimensity 8050 chip from MediaTek, an Arm Mali-G77 GPU, and 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM. This is a capable mobile processor with plenty of memory to run multiple applications at once. If you want, you can use some of the phone’s unused 256GB of UFS 2.1 inbuilt storage (up to 16GB) for more demanding tasks.

It comes pre-installed with HiOS 13.5, Tecno’s custom interface that runs on top of Android 13. The Tecno Phantom V Flip will receive two years of OS updates and three years of security updates from the company.

HiOS is quite smooth in use, and multitasking between apps is simple — thanks to its narrow width, I found it easier to swipe and navigate across the interface. Except for the Phone Master app, you can uninstall the majority of the bloatware listed above. For example, if you want to see per-app battery usage, go to Battery Lab > Battery Setting > Battery Usage.

Performance of the Tecno Phantom V Flip

The Tecno Phantom V Flip scored well in the synthetic benchmark tests, indicating that the Dimensity 8050 chip has enough performance overhead to keep things smooth and competitive for the next few years. AnTuTu awarded the phone 706,648 points, while Geekbench 6 single-core and multi-core scores were 1,106 and 3,220 points, respectively.

The Phantom V Flip can handle most graphically intensive games, such as Fortnite and Genshin Impact. I was able to play Genshin Impact on ‘Medium’ settings without issue — even in very hectic domains. It has a long battery life, measuring 14 hours and 27 minutes in our video loop test.

The Phantom V Flip has a 6.9-inch flexible AMOLED inner display with a full-HD+ resolution and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. It’s very smooth and bright, especially when you turn on the High Brightness Mode in the display settings. In several apps, content looks good on the inner display, and the phone supports HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG codecs. The split-screen mode works well for apps, as does the built-in camera and YouTube. On the outside, there is a circular 1.32-inch cover panel that resembles a round smartwatch screen.

Cameras Tecno Phantom V Flip

The Phantom V Flip has a 64-megapixel primary camera as well as a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. You can also take selfies with a front-facing (when unfolded) 32-megapixel camera housed in a hole-punch cutout in the center.

For better results, I found myself disabling the AI features on the camera, but your mileage may vary. In low-light situations, the primary camera’s Super Night mode captures enough detail in seconds.

The Tecno Phantom V Flip lowers the price of foldable phones, but it makes some sacrifices along the way. For example, unlike more expensive models, it lacks a larger external display capable of running apps or even games.

The Tecno Phantom V Flip’s display is fluid and responsive, and apps load quickly thanks to the capable MediaTek processor and 120Hz refresh rate. The battery life is also quite consistent, and the 45W wired charging is useful — it is faster than the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s 25W charging via a PPS charger. If you don’t mind some of the caveats mentioned above, the Phantom V Flip is a good option if you’re looking for a foldable phone under Rs. 60,000.
