How to send numbered lists, bullet points, and more in WhatsApp messages

With the new text formatting that WhatsApp has brought to its platforms, you can now message using block quotes, numbered lists, bullet lists, and inline codes. Along with the standard bold, italic, strikethrough, and monospace formats that were added in earlier updates, these formats are also available. In this post, we’ll look at how to improve your messages using the newest WhatsApp text formatting features, like bullets, numbers, block quotes, and inline codes.

How to format a WhatsApp message with bullets

Step 1: Launch a WhatsApp conversation

Step 2: Tap the text input field, then tap the keyboard’s “-” symbol and a space. It will show the bullet point.

Step 3: Type something to add a new bullet below and hit enter.

The bullet disappears and the list comes to an end if you hit the enter key without writing anything.

As an example:

  • recommending to a friend or group of friends the top 5 places to visit over the weekend.
  • Provide your housemate with a shopping list.

How to include numbered lists in a WhatsApp conversation

  • Step 1: Start a WhatsApp conversation.
  • Step 2: Press and hold the text box while typing a single or double-digit number from the keyboard, separated by a space and a period. It generates a numbered list.
  • Step 3: Type something and press Enter to add a new point with a number below.

The list ends and the numbered point is removed if you hit the enter key without writing anything.

As an illustration:

  • giving instructions to someone, such as a friend who needs to know how to format text on WhatsApp. e.g., Steps 1 through 3.
  • recommending to your friend the top 5 shoe brands, arranged in decreasing quality order.
  • After the meeting, give a colleague access to the agenda and action items.

How to include quotation marks in a WhatsApp message

  • Step 1: Click on the text input field while in an open WhatsApp chat.
  • Step 2: Tap the > symbol and then the space bar on the keyboard.
  • Step 3: Type text, and it will be displayed in block quotes. If you hit Enter, though, the new text you type will not be enclosed in block quotes.
  • Step 4: Use the green arrow button to send it.

Examples:

  • Highlighting key quotes or statements from a conversation with someone.
  • Quoting external sources for the information you’ve shared.

How to add inline codes to WhatsApp messages?

  • Step 1: Open WhatsApp chat and navigate to the person or group’s chat screen where you want to send the inline code.
  • Step 2: Tap the message box at the bottom. Then, tap on the symbol, then the text, and finally the symbol again. In other words, arrange the text between two symbols.

If you press the backspace/delete key on your keyboard, the inline code effect disappears. To restore the text to its inline code format, simply type the symbol again.

Examples:

  • Delivering direct quotes or parts of a speech.
  • Emphasize the supporting claims or arguments.
